Narasimhan’s Bangalore International Centre transforms a decaying colonial bungalow into a vibrant cultural hub. The design preserves original trees and wraps a subtle ring around the structure. It avoids a large, imposing museum, instead creating an active public space with food courts, gift shops, and communal amenities.
Narasimhan highlights that sustainability is no longer merely a certification—it is a fundamental hygiene factor in design. The ‘One Earth’ office building uses performance-driven design and AI sensors to optimize energy consumption efficiently. It significantly reduces its carbon footprint while ensuring open, public-friendly ground levels for community interaction and accessibility.
The most ambitious effort described is the cleanup of Bangalore’s stormwater drains. Recognizing that these channels had become neglected sewage dumping grounds, Narasimhan initiated a project to transform 11 kilometers of drain into clean, accessible public parks and wetlands. By collaborating with various government agencies and civic activists, he successfully converted a gray, boring asset into a green, renewable public space, significantly reducing pollution and flooding risks.
Narasimhan emphasizes that architects must bridge the gap between politicians, bureaucrats, and the public. He highlights the Bangalore Design Center as a hub for continuous education, featuring maps, programs, and a free public library on town planning to empower citizens and future designers.
Narasimhan concludes by urging designers to adopt a philosophy of proactive citizenship, where they do not wait for permission to make positive changes. He emphasizes that while Bangalore faces immense infrastructural challenges, the city can heal itself through dedicated, collaborative effort and a genuine love for its environment. By acting as an irresistible force against immovable objects, architects and citizens can take ownership of the public realm. Ultimately, Narasimhan believes that by reducing waste and prioritizing public good, Bangalore can regain its status as a great city, functioning in harmony with nature.
