Tucked into the lush landscape of Thiruvananthapuram, Aashiyana is a residence that balances context, climate, and craft. Designed by architect Srijit Srinivas, this bungalow is conceived as more than a tropical retreat-it is a spatial journey where bold colour, filtered light, and thoughtful materials orchestrate a distinctive atmosphere.

From the street, the home appears quiet and restrained, its rectilinear form and recessed openings shielding the interiors from the tropical sun. Despite the plot’s irregular shape, the lush landscape is designed to turn it into an asset.
Within the lush landscape, neat bands of grass, trees, and built-in seating follow the home’s linear geometry, creating a setting that feels intentional and inviting. A grey and warm brick-toned exterior sets the architectural tone, with the brick hue recurring throughout the house, framing, energising, and curating spaces.
From the sheltered porch, the entrance offers an unexpected jolt of energy : a brick-hued wall rising beside a matte black staircase signals the home’s bold material language. To one side, the double-height living room—the heart of the home—fuses tradition and modernity with minimal but thoughtful furnishings, such as a leather sofa softened by rattan armrests.
Adjacent lies a compact courtyard: an open-to-sky retreat forming a meditative pause where a perforated jaali filters sunlight into dappled shadows across its wall while the pebbled floor creates a sensory experience.
Flooring plays a central role in defining the interiors. A diagonal chessboard-like arrangement of earthen and charcoal-grey tiles lends rhythm to common zones, flowing into the dining area where rattan chairs encircle a simple table against a muted grey backdrop.
The same motif appears in white and grey variations in other areas, providing visual unity with subtle differentiation. A special grey wall finish offsets this bold flooring, calming the interiors with a subdued neutrality.
The plan integrates living, dining, and kitchen with ease while reserving intimacy for the ground floor bedrooms. The master suite in the southwest corner enjoys garden views, privacy, and a walk-in wardrobe.
Above, the upper floor shifts into a gentler palette. The flooring becomes finer, with softer motifs, marking the transition from communal liveliness to private retreat. A slim bridge connects the two wings, overlooking the living and courtyard volumes while leading to a wall of open shelving that holds the family’s keepsakes.
A cheerful yellow sofa animates the informal family lounge, which also doubles as a play corner for the young son. Completing this level are a third bedroom and a generous terrace.
The design remains deeply responsive to environment and lifestyle. Cross-ventilation, large openings, and skylights choreograph an ever-changing play of light and shadow. The recurring brick-toned accent walls punctuate the muted grey interiors, ensuring vibrancy without excess.
Notably, every element—from furniture and finishes to art—was crafted in-house by Fairview Decors, the firm’s interior wing, ensuring seamless dialogue between architecture and interiors.
With its bold material palette, restrained yet playful colour, and finely woven details, Aashiyana stands as a functional, expressive, and deeply personal home rooted in its climate and culture.
