    1. HSC Designs | Ahmedabad

    Indian Design

At HSC Designs, “Indianness” is not a motif to be imprinted but a climate-intelligent muscle memory. Expressed through courtyards that breathe, chajjas that shade with an understanding of local climates, and thermal radiation calculations. They translate these vernacular instincts through parametric logic, letting data sketch what tradition already knows. In Re-Crete, their research-by-design furniture line. This becomes tactile: rubble, tile offcuts, and stone katran are transformed into beautiful terrazzo and China mosaic patterns.

Indianness is also circular by culture, as mothers did before, repair, reuse, ju-gaad, which they now scale to address a construction-waste crisis with elegance rather than apology. It is people, masons, mosaic artists, and concrete casters, whose skills they turn into grassroots sustainability, so craft becomes livelihood, not footnote. Built for heat, dust, and monsoon, their pieces are frugal without being spare, repairable, and proud of the newness in their oldness. Rooted in place yet fluent everywhere, they read as contemporary anywhere precisely because they are unmistakably from somewhere. For them, Indianness is a design engine: circular, people-centered, & climate-wise, urban waste reborn as future heritage, intimate with both hand and city.

Indianness matters because it reminds us that design is not just aesthetic but responsible; it carries forward a tradition of making the utilitarian beautiful and the beautiful durable. In a time when sustainability is often framed as a new concern, Indian design demonstrates that frugality and reinvention have always been part of their cultural DNA. For Rockpaperscissors, using plywood waste is not only about reducing impact but also about expressing a contemporary Indian voice – one that is understated, relevant, and confident.
