Becoming a Local Landmark

Conceptualized for the Thomson Group, which has its roots across various sectors including poultry, transport, warehousing and now hospitality, the project was envisioned as a luxurious yet affordable fine-dining destination. With an open-all-day format and a space that welcomes families, tourists, and youth alike, Thomson Casa has quickly become a local landmark and a destination in itself.

Ambiance

From the moment one enters, the ambience speaks of scale and elegance. A towering concrete slab and a five-metre-high vertical wall set the stage for what lies within. An atmosphere crafted through towering volumes, lush vertical gardens, warm lighting, and seamless design language.

Rooted in Natural Surroundings

The restaurant architecture leans towards a contemporary style, with bold volumes and open plans that encourage interaction and visual connectivity. Despite its grand form, the design remains rooted in the natural surroundings of Thrissur. By using vertical gardens and earthy materials to blend into the context while retaining a strong individual identity.

A major design challenge—an existing 3-metre site slope—was transformed into an opportunity. Instead of flattening the land, the design team incorporated the gradient to craft multiple levels connected through gentle slopes and detailed staircases, even integrating a drive-in space for travellers and quick diners. This not only enhanced accessibility but also added an engaging spatial rhythm, proving the designers’ ability to convert constraints into features.

Interplay of Materials

The structure beautifully transitions from exterior to interior. Floor-length glass façades framed in finely finished wood invite the outdoors in. This interplay between hard concrete and soft greens creates a tranquil and immersive environment.

Interior Zones

Inside, the restaurant is divided into four seating zones. Indoor dining, family space, outdoor seating, and semi-open arrangements. Here, each carries its distinct aura while adhering to a cohesive visual narrative.

Rich Material Palette

The interiors are driven by a rich material palette that fuses concrete with wood, Moroccan tiles, terracotta, and granite. Touches of blue in the upholstery provide visual contrast to the browns and neutrals that dominate the space.

Art Installations

The overall feel is elegant yet grounded, luxurious yet simple. Adding to the immersive feel is a 10-metre-long ocean-themed wall installation by artist Srikanth, composed of 256 individual sculptural units. This dramatic art wall serves as a talking point for diners and an eye-catching landmark even from the main road.

Furniture Design

Every detail within Thomson Casa has been meticulously crafted. All furniture, including dining tables, partitions, and seating, has been custom-made by Earth Craft to suit the specific ambience and user flow of the space. The visual storytelling continues through black-and-white photographs capturing the Thomson Group’s legacy, creating a deeper emotional connection for visitors.

Ceiling Design Details

Another key feature is the ceiling, enhanced with copper wire star-shaped hanging art installations inspired by Moroccan tile patterns. These suspended elements bring attention to the ‘fifth wall’ and add a touch of drama and artistic flair. While concrete dominates structurally, its visual heaviness is balanced with greenery, artwork, and decorative wooden panels.

Outdoor Spaces

The exterior areas are equally celebrated. A voluminous green wall, 6 metres tall and 50 metres wide, offers privacy and acoustic comfort, while outdoor seating accommodates over 32 guests in a nature-embraced setup. Statues made from random rubble stone, flowing water features, and the sound of trickling water transform the area into a tranquil oasis perfect for evening gatherings.

Safety Elements

Safety elements are seamlessly integrated into the design language. Fibre-Reinforced Plastic (FRP) spheres, each weighing approximately 6 kg and finished in concrete texture, serve both as safety barriers and aesthetic sculptures, especially around water features like the fish pond. Details like steel rod-and-patta handrails enhance movement through spaces while maintaining visual openness.

Eco-Conscious Aspects

Thomson Casa further reinforces its eco-conscious approach by installing vertical gardens across the façade. These not only add natural beauty but also contribute to thermal comfort. The developers built in a drip irrigation system to ensure easy maintenance, highlighting their emphasis on sustainability and long-term usability.

From concept to execution, Earth Craft have ensured that every space within Thomson Casa evokes emotion, facilitates connection, and offers comfort. It’s a space where thoughtful design intersects with culinary indulgence, where families celebrate, friends gather, and travellers find respite, all wrapped in elegance, nature, and warmth.

As Caletal continues to expand its design portfolio across residential, commercial, and hospitality segments, Thomson Casa remains a signature of their philosophy, merging luxury with purpose, and creativity with community.
