Intuitive and Responsive Planning

On the ground floor, the plan comprises a sunken living area, dining, kitchen, and a guest bedroom. The living space spills onto an infinity pool deck, creating an effortless blend between interior and exterior. The pool edge vanishes into the landscape, making the water appear as if it flows into the horizon.

First Floor

On the first floor, a multi-functional family lounge overlooks the pool and leads into a master suite designed with flexibility, able to function as a workspace, reading nook, or sleeping area. The overall spatial layout ensures visual continuity, while smart zoning offers moments of solitude and intimacy.

Courtyard

A central open-to-sky courtyard becomes the soul of the house, allowing the landscape to flow through the home, bringing in light, air, and the sounds of nature. Every room offers framed views of the outdoors, making nature an integral part of daily living.

House Orientation

The house is oriented eastward, ensuring that morning light fills the living spaces, while the surrounding mountains provide shade and drama through the day.

Final Outcome

The architecture is deeply site-responsive, conforming to the natural terrain and embracing it. The house transforms into a pavilion-like structure, allowing natural ventilation and cool breezes to pass through effortlessly. The design reflects sustainability and simplicity, keeping the built form low and grounded in its environment.

Locally Rooted Material Palette

Laterite stone, sourced from the region, forms the core structure and adds thermal mass, keeping interiors cool. Kota stone flooring offers durability, elegance, and a natural feel underfoot. Exposed concrete and wooden finishes create a warm yet minimalist aesthetic, aligned with the rustic charm of the setting.

Due to its remote location deep in the hinterlands, the project came with logistical hurdles that transformed into meaningful opportunities.

Material procurement and construction became a community-driven effort, with local laborers and artisans setting up camp on-site.

This collaborative construction process blurred the line between building and bonding, infusing the space with a sense of ownership and place.

Ultimately, this modern farmhouse, Ekam, is more than just a weekend home. It is a climate-responsive, contextually rooted architectural expression, a space that prioritises slow living, ecological sensitivity, and the joy of simplicity. Every corner of the house reflects a dialogue with the land, making it a true extension of its natural surroundings.
