This multi generational home is a testament to the ability of the design practice to blend aesthetic appeal with practical functionality. His visionary approach and the Design Consortium’s expertise in providing a solution to a complex brief have resulted in a landmark home in the town of Moradabad that sets a new standard for residential architecture.
This Multi Generational Home Blends Aesthetics & Functionality | Design Consortium
Creating a comfortable, multi generational home that meets the needs of an elderly father, his son and wife, and their three children is a challenge that requires a careful balance of functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability. This family’s brief called for a minimalist and contemporary design that would exude a sense of class while maintaining simplicity. The result is an attractive modern home around a verdant courtyard, with thoughtful spaces along two main axes.
The centre of the house is the triple-height courtyard. Further, highlighted by a stunning lighting designed by Vibhor Sogani. The living space acts as the nucleus around which all other spaces revolve.
This courtyard is dominated by a stunning tree, not only bringing a touch of nature to the interior but also flooding the interior spaces with natural light, an open layout thanks to strategically placed skylights in balconies to ensure that the courtyard is visible from many vantage points in the house.
The ground floor of the house with an impressive double height foyer accentuated by a steel “tree of life” mural by Vibhor Sogani, formal dining, bar and lounge, kitchen, mater bedroom and guest bedroom articulated with a central triple height courtyard.
These spaces are designed to flow into each other through their looseness, adding a sense of spaciousness and ease of movement.
The floor is open at the end of the northeast and west aisles, revealing the water feature, entryway with artistic sculptures, adding to the home’s charm.
Moving up to the first floor, the design emphasises connectivity and constant openness. Areas on this level open to four diagonal axes facing the central courtyard, creating a perfectly integrated view throughout the house. On this level is another master bedroom, the two daughters and a son’s bedroom, all arranged around two private living areas. These lounges provide intimate gathering places for the family, further enhancing the sense of community in the home.
The second floor is dedicated to relaxation and well-being, with a gym, spa, home theatre and entertainment centre opening onto a large open terrace. The gallery acts as an extension of the central spaces, and it provides the perfect atmosphere for relaxation and social gatherings, panoramic open vistas.
The traditional RCC frame with ACC block masonry is used in the construction of the house, but the choice of materials for the finishes is anything but simple. The marble flooring adds an element of luxury, while the extensive use of metal and glass gives you a feeling of lightness and clarity in the spaces.
The team uses wood creatively to evoke warmth and a sense of human touch where it matters most, cultivating a balanced and inviting atmosphere. They deliberately choose muted shades of grey and soft pastel hues to complement this warmth. This subtle approach to colour creates an atmosphere of harmony and peace without harsh contrasts or bold statements.
The architectural brilliance of this residence lies in its ability to create a sense of unity with nature. The glass windows and doors act as portals that invite the surrounding landscape inside with large attached terraces, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. As you wander through the home, the verdant courtyard/ open decks, swaying trees, and vibrant garden become a living mural that changes with the seasons.
The design of the Residence thoughtfully maximizes the use of natural light to illuminate every nook and cranny. The double-height double-glazed openings allow the sun’s rays to flood the interiors, creating a warm and inviting ambiance throughout the day. This ingenious approach significantly reduces the need for artificial lighting during daylight hours, further enhancing the residence’s sustainable credentials.
Sustainability is at the heart of this home, evident in the thoughtful blend of green technologies and systems. The design team showcased the grey-water treatment feature as a waterfall in the front garden, rather than concealing it. Also, making a bold statement about the importance of water conservation. This home has solar panels with a 15-kilowatt plant on the terrace. Furthermore, maximises a solar geyser and a waste treatment plant. The design maximises daylight through the central courtyard. Further, with zero need for artificial lighting and a lower energy consumption throughout the home.
This house caters to a multi-generational house, provides spaces suitable for public areas and private living. The thoughtful combination of natural materials, sustainable technology and sophistication results in a home that is not only visually stunning but also eco-friendly. This home is a perfect example of sustainable luxury, blending a green building system with contemporary modern living.
