The client envisioned a contemporary residence that would serve as a quiet retreat within the dense urban fabric—balancing modern aesthetics with a lived-in warmth. Functionality, spatial fluidity, and a strong connection with nature were prioritized.
The home was to accommodate a multigenerational family, enabling both communal and private moments without compromising on light, ventilation, or spatial clarity. Material sensibility and a minimalist expression were essential, along with provisions for natural greens.
The brief emphasized a timeless architectural language that avoids visual clutter, allows for future adaptability, and resonates with a sense of calm sophistication.
The process began with volumetric studies to address zoning, light ingress, and cross-ventilation, followed by spatial sequencing that reflects the family’s lifestyle rhythm. A hierarchy of spaces was developed—from semi-public to private—using subtle level shifts and layered transparencies.
Structural interventions were kept minimal to enable spatial fluidity and longer sightlines. Material selection was driven by context, durability, and sensorial quality.
Detailing focused on harmonizing utility with aesthetics—balustrade designs, facade articulation, and joinery were all resolved in dialogue with light and proportion. The result is an architecture of restraint, depth, and clarity.
The staircase area undoubtedly holds our heart — it’s more than just a functional transition; it’s a space that anchors the entire home both spatially and emotionally. Positioned at the core of the house, this stairwell was envisioned not only as a vertical connector but as a contemplative pause, a backdrop for everyday moments and meaningful exchanges.
Bathed in soft natural light, the staircase draws your gaze with its sculptural simplicity and warm material palette. The seamless integration of wood-clad volumes with the neutral flooring evokes a quiet richness, while the gentle curve of the handrail softens the geometry. The green pocket tucked under the stairs breathes life into the space, offering a moment of nature indoors — a symbolic grounding point.
What makes this space truly special is its ability to invite stillness and interaction. It’s where one lingers, converses, or simply sits in silence — as captured in the image. It becomes a place of pause amidst the rhythm of the house.
More than an architectural element, the staircase represents the soul of the house — rooted in calm, intentional in design, and deeply human in experience. It is here that the essence of the home quietly reveals itself.
Another aspect of the house that enhances the spaces is natural lighting. Natural daylight filters through sheer curtains in the living area, gently diffused by the soft cream-toned surfaces and warm wooden panels. Light doesn’t just illuminate this space — it bathes it completely. The glow settles onto textures and across levels, creating zones of presence and pause.
The overarching design direction has been “contemporary minimalism with a touch of Indian traditional modernism”.
Minimalism here embraces warmth rather than appearing stark or cold. Warm finishes, tactile textures, and organic touches actively soften the aesthetic and infuse life into the spaces.
The palette leans towards muted, earthy tones — beige floors, wooden panels, and cream walls. As a result, it creates a seamless canvas that allows light and shadow to play gently throughout the day.
Every design element has a purpose and is thoughtfully placed. There is a subtle emphasis on nature and tranquility, seen in indoor planting pockets, large windows that frame the outdoors, and the intentional use of natural light. The furniture and decor follow the same philosophy — low-slung, sleek silhouettes with a touch of handcrafted charm.
The elevation exhibits clean lines and a muted material palette. Primarily, it features soft grey plaster and bands of exposed metal textures that wrap the structure horizontally. The extensive use of glass in the balconies creates an impression of openness. Meanwhile, vertical string screens soften the effect, adding a layer of contemporary elegance.
Strategically placed planters bring nature up the levels, creating a blur between built and green zones. The front-facing balconies serve both aesthetic and functional purposes. Moreover, they act as breakout spaces while simultaneously contributing to the thermal comfort of the interior. The overall massing reads as linear and grounded, yet distinctively modern.
The design of the house carefully modulates itself to suit the lifestyle of a private urban home. It consciously avoids excess; instead, it celebrates natural materials and prioritizes the emotional experience of space. It’s a home that doesn’t scream for attention but rather speaks in a calm, composed language of simplicity and depth.
