  • Vidarth is a Contemporary Style Home Blending Tradition with Modern Design | The Brick Tales

Vidarth is an example of residential architecture that takes inspiration from traditional building elements and promotes a lifestyle which is deeply rooted with a modern approach, embodying the essence of a contemporary style home. It is an attempt to harmonize traditional materials with a modern design sense.

Editor’s Note: “Vidarth is where memory converges with modernism. With its red sandstone courtyards and inlaid terrazzo floors, it preserves whispers of old homes in modern clarity. The house collects light, stone, and space in a choreography of calmness. Here, tradition flourishes afresh, rather than just surviving.” ~ Anusha Sridhar

The house is built on a 5400 sq. ft. plot with a small garden and verandah space in the front. As one enters, one is welcomed by a foyer space which opens into a formal living space on one side and a family room on the other side.

    Entrance Foyer

The design places the lift core and foyer space in a way that separates the formal living area from the rest of the house.

Separating the formal living space from the main areas allowed the family spaces to stay as open as possible. As a result, this design preserved privacy while maintaining the openness of the home.

    Spatial Zoning

The ground floor is organized around the central courtyard which is an interpretation of the traditional typology of haveli houses of Rajasthan.

The dining, an open kitchen, family spaces and master bedroom surround the central court on the ground floor. On the upper floor, a passage encircles the court and leads to the son’s bedroom, entertainment room, and guest bedrooms.

The beautifully designed indoor courtyard filters in natural light from the skylight. As a result, it forms the center point of the house, around which all activities happen. This brings in the nostalgia of the traditional houses that the clients have lived through their lives.

    Material Palette

Agra red sandstone adorns the courtyard walls, while panels of Basalt stone with brass inlays add contrast and detail. The wall also features a decorative panel with hand painted lotus motif.

The design uses light grey coloured terrazzo as the primary flooring material and combines it with white marble inlays and stripes of different proportions. These elements subtly guide movement and create a sense of direction and flow in the passage area.

The detailed flooring patterns clearly articulate the transition of spaces. In the courtyard and foyer, inlay patterns of Agra red sandstone and white marble enhance the flooring, adding to the earthy visual rhythm of the surroundings.

On the first floor, the son bedroom and the balcony space has flooring detail in kudapah inlay with the same light grey terrazzo.

A spacious balcony with a skylight and Agra sandstone louvers connects the son’s bedroom in the front to the entertainment room. The louvers create an interesting play of light while maintaining privacy for both spaces.

    Facade Treatment

Basalt stone clads the south façade, while a curved peeping window offers a clear view of the main gate without being visible from the front. This window creates an interesting feature on the façade. Moreover, an arched verandah complements it and connects to the master bedroom on the ground floor. Vertical stone louvers wrap the first floor, serving as both a shading device and a privacy screen. It also gives a very cohesive look to the façade while creating a perfect balance with the grey Basalt stone walls.
