In today’s rapidly changing design world, architects are more than builders, they are storytellers, problem solvers, and visionaries. In this exclusive keynote, Ar. Gurjit Singh Matharoo, principal architect at Matharoo Associates, takes us through his architectural masterpieces. He delves into the design philosophies and techniques that have shaped his iconic projects over the years.
Gurjit Singh Matharoo was conferred an International Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2012 – only the third Indian, after Architects B.V. Doshi and Charles Correa, to receive this honor. The studio, Matharoo Associates, has gained International and Domestic acclaim for its innovative work, and are Winner of the 2011 Chicago Athenaeum Architectural Award, the 2010 AR House Award, and the 2009 Emerging Architecture Award, to name a few.
Beyond architecture, he also shares his passion for automobiles and his remarkable contributions to the field. This session offers a rare glimpse into Matharoo’s visionary approach, making it a must-watch for architecture and design enthusiasts!
According to Matharoo, the design philosophy of Matharoo Associates relies on sensitivity to context. He believes that each project should be an expression of its context, taking into account the natural environment, culture, and functionality. He often employs simple raw materials such as concrete, steel, and glass, at times in ways that enhance both beauty and structural performance. Simple, bold forms combined with an experimental approach to details allow for minimalist forms that are still valuable in expressive ways.
Amongst the several architectural masterpieces by Matharoo, he shared about few of his projects, close to his heart, that reflect a deep understanding of site, climate, and culture, making his projects both functional and aesthetically striking.
First Blood, the Prathama Blood Centre Ahmedabad, a public blood donation facility presents Matharoo’s innovative design thinking. Matharoo uses design to transform this type of place into a public and engaging social space. The Prathama Blood Centre was designed with a focus on creating a sense of openness and transparency, aiming to demystify the blood donation process. Matharoo’s design ingeniously utilizes a central void and extensive glass walls, allowing visitors to visually connect with the various activities within the center.
Set in Stone, a private residence designed by Matharoo Associates exemplifies his mastery of materials and his ability to create spaces that evoke a profound sense of permanence and serenity. Located in a tranquil setting, the house is characterized by its extensive use of stone, particularly local varieties, which are employed not only for structural integrity but also for their textural qualities. Matharoo’s design emphasizes the interplay between the earthy nature of the stone and the delicate balance of light and shadow, creating spaces that feel both grounded and ethereal.
Cut Fold Bend Play, by Gurjit Singh Matharoo, showcases his experimental approach to architecture, pushing the boundaries of form and material. This project is a playful exploration of how simple manipulations of materials, like cutting, folding, and bending, can create complex and dynamic spatial experiences. Matharoo’s approach emphasizes the inherent properties of materials, transforming them into architectural elements that are both functional and visually engaging.
The architect’s own workspace is a reflection of his design ideology. A simple yet powerful structure, the studio is characterized by an emphasis on efficiency, openness, and creative adaptability. The building seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings and a ‘pool’ while providing an inspiring environment for architectural exploration.
Matharoo’s design practices are about sustainability, not just in terms of environmentally friendly materials, but through passive design strategies for energy-efficient usage. He uses an abundance of local material, incorporates natural ventilation, and employs shading strategies while keeping to his goal of limiting reliance on mechanical heating or cooling systems. His inventive use of materials such as reinforced concrete and steel allows for aesthetic and artistic benefits.
Gurjit Singh Matharoo’s architecture embodies the impactful force of innovative design coupled with an awareness of context. His work pushes the boundaries of formal design while also rooting in the context of its surroundings. Matharoo pushes the boundaries of form, material, and function, innovating and forward-thinking the future of architecture, demonstrating the relevance of modern design to be contemporary while rooted in traditional values.
