The proposed auditorium was part of JKC (Jagarlamudi Kuppuswamy Choudary College), one of the prominent colleges in Guntur, known for its legacy and facade material. This college was inaugurated in 1968. The legacy of the college started with the name given after the noble patron and celebrated philanthropist Sri Jagarlamudi Kuppuswamy Choudary.
Editor’s Note: “Amidst the echoes of academia and ancestry, the JKC Auditorium springs back to life, breathing resilience through design. Sunlight softly filters through jaalis of decorative perforations, casting rhythmic shadows on the old walls. Every surface hints at an ode to preservation, serving as a dialogue between the past and future.” ~ Anusha Sridhar

With the need to upgrade the auditorium facility, the working committee decided to approach and seek guidance and inputs from the alumni, many of whom have grown into prominence in the community in various fields of pursuit.
This encouraged a sense of belonging among the alumni who showed their magnanimity by pooling in resources to fund the project and actively involving in the design discussions with their invaluable inputs.
This renovation of an old auditorium in a college campus and the clients need to present an inspiring element to the multitude of young minds while also indicating a budgetary constraint led the direction of my design thought on various elements including reuse and repurposing of existing steel members of the roof truss and retaining the 14” brick masonry to act as crucial structural support.
The form and additional features were also dictated by the site’s location and orientation. Being a place of extremely hot climatic conditions, the southwest mass of the building was purposely enhanced and lifted to shield the main auditorium from the harsh afternoon sun.
The east front was enhanced with a colonnaded corridor with perforated jaali feature to not only create a dramatic facade and entrance porch and walkway but to also provide privacy and screen the main hall from the roadside intrusive noise, direct light and dust.
The auditorium’s design embraces a single-tone concept throughout the space, creating harmony, simplicity, and visual unity. By using a consistent colour palette, the space will feel cohesive & immersive.
While selection of diverse materials will provide texture, depth and contrast. The Single tone approach aims to create an environment that is both elegant and timeless.
The choice of materials, though varied, will adhere to a consistent hue, allowing them to complement one another while enhancing the visual and tactile experience of the space.
The design will highlight the interplay of light, shadow, and texture, creating an atmosphere that feels dynamic yet cohesive.
Vehicles can enter seamlessly from the south corner of the property and exit from the north. Moreover, it ensures smooth accessibility.
The plan includes a designated drop-off point to provide convenient and accessible entry for VIP guests and individuals with disabilities.
The interior remains minimalistic to enhance the hall’s versatility. This multifunctional space can seamlessly transform into an auditorium for college events, an exhibition hall, or a workshop area for students. However, it caters to various needs and activities. Thus, making it an ideal venue for a variety of college events and activities.
Embracing sustainability, we meticulously refurbished and repurposed the existing wooden frames for the doors. However, reducing waste and preserving the original character.
