The Garden Estate is a residential masterpiece that displays a dialogue between art, craft, and architecture. Every design element follows this approach from the outside to the inside. The exteriors of this house are built in a colonial style with a lush English garden that complements the architectural elegance, while its nuanced design integrity and artistry present a transformative style in interior design. The residence comes to life from the ground up, with a meticulous eye on every detail.
Editor’s Note: “The Garden Estate illustrates a conversation among art, craft, and architecture. It is a colonial-style design of both house and garden, with the interiors curated to offer global and local artistry. Thoughtful spatial planning merges with nature, while the materials, custom-made furnishings, and enviable artworks create a sophisticated yet vibrant living experience.” ~ Anusha Sridhar
This Colonial Style House Displays A Dialogue Between Art, Craft & Architecture | Habitat Architects
The art collection curated throughout the house speaks volumes, giving the home a vibrant, emotional depth that perfectly complements its architectural beauty. The Garden Estate vividly represents art and craftsmanship playing leading roles in transforming the residence into a living gallery.
The spatial planning of this residence is a thoughtful choreography, meticulously designed on two defining axes, creating a symmetrical and harmonious composition. The central axis, originating from the main courtyard with a double-height atrium, extends to another courtyard, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces.
The second axis, intersecting with the central one, leads from the atrium to a sculptural staircase, integrating both form and function. The deliberate symmetrical layout places living areas towards the front, maximizing natural light for social spaces while discreetly positioning private areas towards the backside.
This thoughtful design creates a balanced distribution of functions within the home, ensuring both aesthetic appeal and practical living and finding a balanced synergy in terms of composition, volume, and tonality.
The interior décor style of the Garden Estate was an extraordinary amalgamation of local and global artisanal pieces. The iconic MF Husain’s works are injected into the informal lounges and corridors of the house. The compositions of these paintings bring a vibrant depiction of Indian life as a cultural element in contrast to the movement and creativity that bring ease and informality to the living and gathering spaces.
Vintage curios like the large sailboat centerpiece on the lounge’s main table add a touch of nostalgia and craftsmanship. They are part of the storytelling approach to design, carrying whispers of history and journeys, speaking volumes of the home’s patrons and their personal life journeys.
Hand-blown glass and locally sourced metals combine to form locally crafted chandeliers to complement the Indian and Asian craft pieces that adorn the house. The informal space is set with furniture designed for comfort and craftsmanship, made from natural materials such as wood and brass by skilled local artisans. These pieces are a bridge between traditional Indian aesthetics and modern design, providing a subtle backdrop that allows the vibrant arts and crafts elements to shine.
The formal lounges of the estate are graced by Paresh Maity’s expressive works, which delve into India’s cultural and natural landscapes. European-inspired furniture, adorned with luxurious fabrics and clean lines, captures the essence of bespoke design and adds to the interiors.
The French sculptural accents in the garden speak a similar language of fusion —an artistic tribute of French elegance with the soul of Indian craftsmanship. These European design influences take root in an Indian context, at the Garden Estate. Moreover, it is both worldly and distinctly local.
Featuring chandeliers sourced from St. Louis and Baccarat, the pieces’ sparkling crystal forms amplify the impact of Paresh Maity’s works. Thus, creating an aura of elegance and timelessness. Here, each chandelier is both an art piece and a focal point in the design.
The meticulous curation of the Garden Estate extends beyond architectural considerations to the realm of interior design. The interior design is a curated testament reflecting the client’s distinctive personality. Additionally, it is a profound appreciation for classical aesthetics, and deep affection for classic material palettes, colours, and design. A careful selection of exclusively sourced and custom-made pieces complements the bespoke furniture. Thus, adding a layer of uniqueness and refinement to the extraordinary private spaces. This attention to detail extends to every facet of the interior, from the choice of materials to the colour palette. The materials used in the furnishings and finishes are carefully selected for their quality, durability, and aesthetic appeal. The colour palette is a carefully curated symphony, playing on neutral tones. Moreover, it resonates with the surrounding natural environment and contributes to the overall sense of tranquillity and sophistication.
The architectural narrative of this residence is enriched by the deliberate incorporation of trees framing the building. These natural custodians are not mere incidental elements but deliberate components in the overall design orchestration. They serve as living, dynamic frames that complement the structure. Furthermore, it establishes a profound connection with the natural environment. The carefully selected placement of these trees not only softens the edges of the building but also provides a visual rhythm. Moreover, it harmonises with the surrounding landscape.
As the seasons change, the interplay of light and shadow adds an ever-changing dimension to the architectural tableau. The intentional integration of nature into the architectural narrative continues seamlessly. The dining room and foyer feature sliding glass doors that gracefully unveil the manicured garden. However, this elegant design choice transcends the conventional boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. Thus, offering the residents an immersive experience that evolves with the passage of time.
