If you were to step into this Hyderabad house, you would sense harmony in paradox as it harmonizes two distinct units. With both units seamlessly woven together with open-to-sky transitional spaces. Moving around, you get the impression of belongingness, thriving in complete balance with a respect for individuality.
This Hyderabad House Harmonizes Two Distinct Units | Lalith and Jyothi Architects
The larger home unit on the west side of the plot is occupied by a family of five: a couple, their kids, and the paternal mother.
Designed on the east side of the plot, the smaller villa is home to the maternal parents. The physical separation of the two homes stems from the need for liberty, while the interconnected areas between the units originate from the want to be with family. This juxtaposition creates a dynamic interplay of personal, semi-private, and common spaces.
The smaller villa is a single-storey volume designed to maximize utility and comfort. Housing the elderly couple, this unit has a humble layout with a living area, dining space, kitchen, and two bedrooms.
This home exudes a muted sense of warmth and cheerfulness through the use of earthy natural materials. The use of screens and skylights makes the spaces within appear as if flowing into each other.
The verandah adjoining the rear side of the home to the front of the larger villa does so much more than serve as an element of transition.
It is essentially a cocoon for nestling the family’s intimate get-togethers. It is a place for spending those cosy evenings with a cup of tea.
The verandah also helps regulate indoor temperatures by aiding cross-ventilation. All in all, the space rejuvenates people through a dialogue with each other and the surroundings.
The introduction of in-built stone seats and climate-responsive landscaping makes the verandah more functional as well as visually appealing.
The use of natural granite stone for flooring provides the area with a timeless appearance. In totality, the verandah is a multipurpose area. It can be your spillover space for house parties or cultural community meet-ups.
As you move into the larger two-storey unit, you are welcomed into a formal living space via a foyer. This elongated corridor also connects to the informal living area which accommodates the dining area as well. The foyer is a narrow alley-kind of space with a skylight to bring a dramatic ambience.
It imbibes a sense of space and makes the transition to the living areas more beautiful and impactful. Additionally, the ground floor also houses a kitchen and bedroom. On the upper floor, you can find a living area, two bedrooms, and a children’s bedroom.
The staircase in this house represents artistry. It is a masterpiece that easily fits into the design narrative of the living room. The structural components of the staircase are so devised to have a purpose beyond load-bearing.
The staircase membranes extend as a component of the living area, both tangibly and intangibly. The use of tandur flooring propels a calming energy into the house. Every building block of this residence becomes a part of the larger story; composing the narrative a wholesome living experience.
Comprehensively put, the design of this home acknowledges the two most fundamental needs of a person- solitude and socialising. The spaces within, effortlessly blend into each other while accommodating the varying needs of its users.
In fact, the spaces seem to evolve with the people, bringing in the attributes of versatility and dynamism to the home. This leads to the creation of an environment that is full of love, laughter, and happiness.
