This north facing house project in Ahmedabad, India, by Hitesh Mistry & Associates, was designed with the main prerequisite of the client, which was to follow all vastu directions. Each placement of space in the planning of the house is in sync with the plan of the Vastu purusha mandala.
Editor’s Note: “Embracing the principles of Vastu, this residence graces the streets of Ahmedabad with its commanding symmetrical facade. A captivating interplay of mass and voids, coupled with a distinctive material palette, weaves a tapestry of modern contemporary design. The double-height living room, adorned with clean interiors and a subtle aura, seamlessly merges indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a harmonious flow that enchants and inspires.” ~Simran Khare
This North Facing House is in Sync with the Vastu Purusha Mandala | Hitesh Mistry and Associates
Apart from the main spaces, the internal layouts that include the location of beds, wardrobes, the direction of doors and staircase, and even the WC position in bathrooms are in tune with the correct energy flows.
Main plot entrance(N), house entrance(N) and the waterbody (N), basement (E), kitchen (SE), location of staircase (S), pooja room (NE), master bedroom (SW), kids’ room (E & W).
The plan for the house sits on a 54×54-foot square grid. The biggest challenge while designing the house was to create a visually appealing architectural volume while keeping structural columns in place. Additionally, a rigid space planning layout, as per the vastu grid, required specific locations. Since we had complete aesthetic freedom, we could bring out an interesting material palette and architectural facades.
We adopted a modern, contemporary design approach. Thus breaking away from the stereotypical imitation of conventional Vastu-defined homes, where the 9-grid layout often restricts free-flowing creativity.
The deeply spiritual Jain client desired a simple, modern, minimal house that is easy to maintain.
This site nests in a prime, high-end residential area with a road-facing plot in a slum. The north- and east-facing elevations are designed in a way to break the monotony of the grid created by vastu planning.
Upon entering through the double-height entrance door, one gets an uninterrupted vision of the house with the pockets of natural lights entering into the central double-height living room area that is the brahmasthan of the house.
All the spaces of the house connect here. The zoning around it has been done, which provides visual and physical connections internally.
The projecting balcony with its full-width openings gives beautiful green views of the surrounding area.
The material palette was kept minimal. The white Italian marble reflects the natural light, while bright furniture colours add charm to the interior.
Even the wood used in interiors and exteriors is processed. The full-height glazed openings provide transparency and a blend of natural light with seamless views of the surrounding landscape.
The material and colours of custom-made Italian-imported modern-designed furniture follow the same rules.
Everything from ceiling-lighting fixtures, bathroom faucets and accessories, wardrobe systems, door handles, air conditioning systems, kitchen appliances, and art (specific colours and geometry) are designed and peculiarly chosen to add luxury to one’s lifestyle.
The landscape design of the house comprises various species of plants as per the Vastu literature. The connections, like the lily pond right next to the main door and the green verandah next to the dining opening, give blooming green views of the landscape whenever you enter or exit.
