A Saga of a Sustainable Home Intertwining a Profound Love for Nature | Angana Studio

Beyond the mere narrative of a dwelling lies a saga of a sustainable home intertwining a profound love for nature with the embrace of contemporary comforts. It is illuminated by interiors and lively verandas, inherent to vernacular architecture. It takes on a renewed perspective in this villa conceptualized by Shubhankar Tamrakar, Principal Architect at ANGANA STUDIO.

Mr. Praveen Chandrakar, driven by his deep connection to the land, sought to build a residence adjacent to his farmlands. The site is on the city’s outskirts without compromising on modern comforts. As a devoted farmer, he envisioned a design that seamlessly integrates natural and vernacular elements. Thus, the design fosters a harmonious relationship with the surrounding environment.

Efforts to echo the verdant aesthetics of the exterior of this sustainable home are evident in the veranda walls, adorned with intricate leaf and vine motifs. The deliberate full-length glass facade seamlessly blurs the boundaries between the conventional drawing room and the extraordinary veranda, evoking the intimate gathering spaces found in traditional village households.

Facade

sustainable home

The front facade of this sustainable home showcases a pitched roof adorned with vernacular design elements, complemented by earthy tones that harmonise effortlessly with the natural surroundings. The ground floor of the residence serves as a spacious godown, while the 3200-square-foot first floor is the cherished nest of the Chandrakar family. Accessible via a grand 4-foot-wide double-curved staircase, the ascent leads to a 500-square-foot veranda—a poignant homage to the village tradition of entering homes through such open spaces. This architectural element not only exudes elegance but also facilitates a seamless transition between built and open environments, embodying a harmonious blend of culture and design.

Transition Spaces

The meticulously crafted Mandala main entrance door, standing at 9 feet tall and 4.5 feet wide, unveils a serene tableau featuring a prominent Buddha statue and a handcrafted wall mural—an embodiment of tranquillity and artistry. Complementing the entrance’s ambiance are a contemporary console and an exposed concrete planter, culminating in a harmonious fusion of sophistication and natural elements.

Eco Conscious Interior

To ensure a healthy indoor environment in this sustainable home, the interior walls of the residence are adorned with lime-based textures, mitigating indoor air pollution by minimizing volatile organic compounds. This eco-conscious approach not only promotes sustainability but also enhances the living experience within the space.

The veranda seamlessly transitions into a luminous living room adorned with full-length windows, infusing the space with warmth and vitality. The lime-based textured walls, painted in a sophisticated grey monotone, harmonize with the plush couch and the wooden textures of the center table foot and pelmet.

In deliberate contrast, the TV backdrop is kept pristine white, embellished with delicate golden strips that form a symmetrical pattern, accentuating the TV cabinet area.

Living and Dining

Integrating the living and dining areas creates a spacious yet distinct ambiance, delineating activities within the room. The dining area’s ceiling boasts intricate flower motifs in exposed concrete, lending an artistic yet casual air.

Adjacent to the dining area, a terrace overlooks the owner’s farmland, offering a picturesque vista from the comfort of home.

Open Kitchen

The open kitchen, delineated from the dining hall by a sleek breakfast counter adorned with bubble lights, enhances the allure of this minimalist-themed residence. Comprising contemporary elements, the kitchen features a granite-topped platform, a multifunctional sink, and tinted glass cabinets mounted overhead.

The addition of spacious modular cabinets in a refreshing blue hue infuses the cooking space with an invigorating sense of upliftment.

Pooja Room

Situated on the eastern side of the house, the Pooja room offers tranquil views of the early sunrise. Surrounded by water on two adjacent sides, it benefits from a micro-cooling effect. Clad in stone, the Pooja room offers ample space for the couple to worship, fostering a serene environment conducive to spiritual reflection.

Master Bedroom

Wrapped in a soothing pistachio green hue, the master bedroom invites serenity into its embrace. Adorned with captivating 3D wall art featuring deer motifs, the space comes alive with natural charm. Thanks to expansive windows flooding the room with ample daylight, artificial lighting becomes unnecessary, allowing the beauty of the outdoors to permeate the space throughout the day.

Master Bathroom

A harmonious blend of indoor and outdoor elements, the master bathroom features a semi-open sky shower area seamlessly integrated with a semi-covered space. Embracing the essence of nature, the front wall is adorned with alternating slate stone and grass cladding, creating a refreshing oasis for the discerning bathroom enthusiast.

Kids Bedroom

For the bedroom for the client’s twin daughters, the 16’x12′ room provides ample space for a variety of activities. To enhance the project’s sustainability, traditional wallpapers were eschewed in favor of textured walls and wall paintings executed by artists.

The kids’ room boasts soothing pastel hues. Depictions of natural elements such as trees and leaves adorns the space, seamlessly integrating nature into the architectural design. Conversely, the guest bedroom features vibrant wall paintings in bold hues, complemented by a metal hanging light. The lighting juxtaposes the softness of the colors, a sleek minimalist side table, and a picturesque view of lush greenery.

Parent’s Room

The client’s parent’s room spans 224 square feet. It boasts an attached dressing room, toilet, and a generously proportioned balcony overlooking the front lawn. In alignment with the house’s minimalist theme, this room epitomizes understated elegance.
