  • A 3 storey house instilled with a spacious forte | DESIGN PARADIGM

The approach towards the design of this house in Jamnagar was to work out a way to maintain the privacy of the home that’s on a small street without making it too closed or introverted. We explored the idea of establishing voids in the form of deeply seated windows that would seem to look over into the small street at the corner of the property but still avoid direct visual access due to the large cantilever.

Editor’s Note: Design Paradigm’s 3-story house in Jamnagar renders with forms and voids to leverage the vistas, light, and ventilation. Streaks of yellow framing the windows and the stair railing accentuate the monochrome stone facade. The design breathes nature in and exhales positive energy into its spacious, earthy interiors. The mesmerising outdoor sculpture gives life to the landscape. – Gopika Pramod

A bold splash of yellow on the internals of these voids further articulates the element through a controlled use of grey and beige on the solid surfaces. The large lush trees provide a subduing contextual foreground to support the bold material and color palette.

The facade is clad with locally quarried, short-blasted stone and ceramic slabs to form perfect edges yet an earthy-looking mass and feature walls for this introverted house.

The residence essentially starts on the first floor. The ground floor houses a study, parking, an activity space, and a gathering space that, through a plot boundary designed as a screen using steel beams and wire ropes, has complete connectivity with the street.

The residence is planned to have lavish yet controlled spaces neatly placed along a circulation block at the west of the building.

The circulation block filters the west light into the house at every level throughout the day, while the staircase designed to visually float in the space starts acting as a shading device.

The dining area connects the living room and the kitchen block laterally, making it a part of the transitional space and an ideal place to gather as a congregation point throughout the day.

The living room and the bedrooms are illuminated by opening out one entire face of the room; this gives more freedom to lay out the furniture elements and also provides uninterrupted wall planes inside for articulation. Each room is designed to keep the occupant at the center.

The textures and colors communicate sophistication through the innovative and honest exploration of materials. Some of the most exotic marble varieties are used here and laid out to perfection in this project, with the use of perfectly cut and welded steel for the staircases and certain furniture pieces, along with rosewood panels in furniture and doors.

The project went on board towards the end of 2019, and a few days into the commencement of construction, the COVID situation hit and changed and challenged the process and approach towards
construction, supervision, and design decision-making due to the restrictions on meetings and travel. It was a great learning process that challenged us to stick to our design values and adapt to the new normal.

While every element holds significance, there are certain aspects that stand out as personal favorites. Arriving at the entrance through the atrium, from the gradual sheet metal stair, one has the experience of a walk through a landscape with a frame that serves both as a railing and a support for climbing vines. When combined with the metal bird sculpture, seemingly in flight through the space, this adds to the dynamics of the space and encapsulates the essence of the house.

Neelahrish speaks about its residents by telling stories about their personalities through thoughtful design choices.

A series of timeless spaces that make this their home.
