  • A Contemporary Design Bungalow Redefining Modern Urban Living | Manggal Design

Anandam Bungalow in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (Aurangabad) Maharashtra, was created for a multi-generational joint family of ten members. The clients approached our studio with a clear and straight forward brief — they wanted a home comprising eight bedrooms; with interiors donning an India modern aesthetic. As per the client’s requirements, we planned a contemporary design bungalow redefining modern urban living. Basic concept was to make modern contemporary house according to vastu and climatically condition of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (Aurangabad), for which we provided minimum two number of large windows in each and every space for natural light & cross ventilation throughout the bungalow.

Editor’s note : Presenting a design that finds harmony in ventilation and breathtaking vistas, through a striking exterior jaali work. Its contemporary approach impresses with a clean and resolute design layout, while the colour scheme tastefully transitions from dark to neutral tones. A delightful touch lies in the introduction of plants within the washroom, adding a refreshing twist to an already creditable design. ~ Venessa Thomas (Co-Editor)

Received harsh sunlight from the southern and western ends. The building is therefore designed as with no windows on the southern sides. And west side constructed with double wall (with two feet cavity) was constructed to reduce the temperature inside. The intended site for the bungalow, measuring 6700 sq ft, was at an angle with a road along its north and west sides. The positioning for  the  rooms adhered to both vastu and climatic conditions — the pooja room is kept on the north-east, kitchen on the south-east corner, while second floor south side beds was reserved for master bedrooms, And third floor south side beds reserved for sons bed room

A terrace garden on third floor placed on north east corner , a double-height terrace  congregation space for the entire family, was proposed on the first floor and placed on the north-eastern side. A maintenance balcony was devised for the Anandam bungalow too. Placed on the western end, these balconies fit all the services (like toilet plumbing pipe, ac outdoor unit, electric piping , etc ) attached to the rooms, and makes enough room for a maintenance person to access it without hassle to mend any issue.

Considering elevation these balconies are masked by a beautiful white metal square pipe and lined with potted plants inside. The key to successful contemporary elevation is striking right balance between modern aesthetics sustainable design and cultural context. Incorporating stone cladding punctures in the elevation created sense of rhythm and harmony in the design. The white metal jaali is a type of decorative screen made from metal.it is used near the enterance lobby of the building to add visual interest . One enters the three-storied bungalow after taking a flight of rough granite stairs supported by rose gold metal handrails. The stairs are set against the backdrop of an artificial stone clad wall.

The first floor is the public zone with the living, dining, family lounge, kitchen and terrace garden; which flow seamlessly into each other. Plush fabric-clad sofas and single seaters specially curated for the living room face the television wall which feature a criss-cross design crafted out of duco-painted MDF and framed by veneer. A Corian-topped and veneer clad console is also integrated in this ensemble.

Set closer to the kitchen is the dining and family lounge which is separated by a 13 foot high partition (made from plywood and veneer) and integrates a television on a swivel… which can be viewed from the family lounge and the dining area. Comfortable sofas and an eight seater dining table forms the furniture assemblies in these two areas. A wooden panelling on the ceiling connects the family lounge, the dining and kitchen visually.

The open kitchen is an efficient and modern one with an island kitchen and a Corian-topped breakfast table. The crisscross design (created by Duco painted MDF) which stretches across the face of the breakfast table ties living room wall to this area.

A crockery shelf with glass shutters, off white acrylic cabinets and shelves, artificial granite clad dado and a granite counter-top are other highlights of the open kitchen.

The second floor harbours four bedrooms: two master bedrooms each for the elder and younger brother and their wives, the grandparent’s room and the daughter’s room. The grandparent’s room was customised as per their needs, and also enjoys a balcony just as they ordered. The daughter’s bedroom on the other hand overlooks the terrace garden on the first floor, and sees bespoke furniture and furnishings which reflect a soothing colour palette.

The bedroom for the younger brother in the south-east corner has a rich sophisticated and modern look which is rendered through a beige colour palette. We wanted the bed to have an impressive backdrop, so we designedit with cushioned fabric, smoke mirror and wooden fluted details. A laser-cut artwork centralises all these decorative elements; while the blue single seater placed close to the bed offsets the beige and brown colour tone of this room.In the elder brother’s room, the bed is given a prominent royal look with a high bed back designed with fabric cushioning and inserts of gold-finished metal strips. This veneer-backed setting is backlit to enhance the look of the bed, come evening.

Third floor Rooms designed for the two sons face each other and has a youthful vibe to them. While south east corner bedroom wears a grey tone exhibited through a fluted wood and stone veneer wall, against which a grey cushioned headboard is placed. The grey-hued stone veneer is used on the side tables and the bed too. A relaxing chair and potted plants in yellow balances the nondescript hue of this room. The ruggedness of stone veneer flows into the other room (south west corner) too, on the wall, but is well balanced by a veneer frame.

The back-lit stone veneer collage is reminiscent of a modern artwork on the bed back wall. The grey cushioned bed back, curtains and bed linen is offset by the blue-hued single seater placed close by. Akin to all the bedrooms of the house, these two also has a walk-in closet and lavish bathrooms.

The central lobby on this floor is filled with family memorabilia (read photographs) on the wall, potted plants, and a contemporary chandelier.

As the bathrooms were positioned in the road facing western end, we created a small passage with double wall with toughened glass slits. This feature kept the bathrooms well ventilated, and allowed us to incorporate plants in the cavity which rendered freshness to these private zones. Another important attribute we design in all our residential projects

The lobby on the third floor was designed for the young men who occupy the floor — with musical instrument art pieces on the wall, and a veneer-clad floating ceiling from which hangs a string of pendant lights.  One can access the large terrace area which was created for parties and get-togethers and the home theatre, from this lobby.
