  • How to Choose Ceiling Fans for Your Home

Ceiling fans are great for keeping air circulating throughout your home. They can make your home feel cool and breezy on even the muggiest, hottest summer day. You’ll use a lot less air conditioning if you have ceiling fans running in your home, and you’ll spend a lot less money on cooling as a result.

But choosing ceiling fans for your home isn’t always easy, either. There are just too many options! You want to make sure the fans you choose for your home are the right size for the rooms they’re going in, and that they can offer you the features you need to get the most out of them. You also definitely want to choose fan designs you like to complement your home decor and your home’s architectural features. mentioned by Lukas Berezowiec, founder and CEO of No Triangle Studio.

    Measure Your Rooms

Before you start looking at ceiling fans, measure all of the rooms where you’ll want to hang fans. You need to know the square footage of each room, so measure the length and width of each room and multiply those numbers together to arrive at the square footage. If your room is oddly shaped, you will have to do some more complicated calculations to arrive at the square footage of the room. says Jasen Edwards, chair of the Agent Editor Board at Agent Advice

Once you have the square footage of your room, choose your fan size according to these guidelines:

    • Fans under 36 inches for rooms under 75 square feet.
    • Fans 36 to 42 inches for rooms 75 to 150 square feet.
    • Fans 44 to 50 inches for rooms 150 to 225 square feet.
    • Fans 50 to 54 inches for rooms 225 to 400 square feet.
    • Fans larger than 54 inches for rooms larger than 400 square feet.

Remember, though, it’s not just the square footage of the room that matters when you’re choosing a ceiling fan. You also have to consider the height of the ceiling. Your fan should hang seven or eight feet off the floor, so you’ll need a longer-than-standard downrod if your ceilings are higher than about nine feet. Most ceiling fans with downrods come with 12-inch downrods, so you’ll need to buy an extension kit to lower your fan the correct amount. If your ceilings are lower than nine feet, you may want to dispense with the downrod altogether and buy a hugger or flush mount ceiling fan. If your ceilings are heavily pitched, you may want an angle mount ceiling fan. If you’re looking at ceiling fans to put in large rooms, consider hanging two or three large ceiling fans instead.

Narrow Down the Features You Need

Ceiling fans can come with a surprising amount of bells and whistles. Maybe you’re happy with the traditional pull chain and wiring your ceiling fan to the light switch on the wall. But you have options. You can buy a fan that’s controlled by remote, or a smart fan that connects to your phone – you can even control it when you’re away from home, so if you forget to turn it off, no biggie. If you want to control your fan from a wall switch – and want more detailed control than simply “on” and “off” – a fan with a wireless wall control panel might fit the bill. If you’re looking for something to hang in a low-light area, get something with a light fixture. You can even get fans with dimmable light fixtures if you’re not someone who likes a lot of bright light. mentioned by Angela Blakenship, CEO of Best Neighborhood.

    Find That Perfect Design

When you’re looking at different fan designs for your home, think about the furniture you already have and maybe about the architectural style of your house. You may not want to put an ultramodern one-bladed fan into a stately Victorian house (but if you do, you’ll definitely be able to pull it off). Think about the colors, lines, and textures that characterize your existing home decor. Choose a fan with wooden blades that match the wood color of your furniture or trim, and with hardware that matches the hardware (knobs, outlet covers, and light switch covers) in your home. If you have a more funky or eclectic decorating style, choose a fun or unique fan that fits in with everything else. says Bailey Moran, COO of Austin TX Realty.

When you make the choice to buy ceiling fans, you’re making a choice that will pay off for years to come, in the form of comfort and reduced energy costs. Measure your rooms properly and take the time to choose fans that will maximize the comfort of every room in your home.
